Original Items: Only Once Set Available. The Crimean war was fought between the British allied with the French supporting Turkey against Imperial Russian expansionism. It lasted for three years and was generally a huge screw up from start to finish. Ever hear of the "Charge of the Light Brigade" (another great British disaster)? More soldiers died from disease than from fighting. In fact, it really turned out to be an example of what not to do, an example that the Confederacy took good note of and did so well in the early part of the U.S. Civil War.
The Crimea conflict ended in a Russian withdrawal making it another great British victory so everyone brought something home to remember our victorious past!
Here we have an Imperial Russian pioneer saw back short sword sidearm usually worn by artillerymen and sappers. All brass construction Roman short sword style hilt, clearly dated 1838 with a 19 inch partially saw backed single edged blade contained in the original wood and leather covered, brass mounted, scabbard, please note that the frog stud button is absent.
Together with the short sword is an Imperial Russian artillery brass belt buckle showing the full double headed eagle Russian imperial coat of arms over twin cannon barrels. The rear is clearly dated 1837. The belt it is current mounted on is a British white buff leather military waist belt that wasnt too different from the original Russian belt.
